St Petroc's - the small school with big horizons

Early Years (Foundation Stage)

3 – 5 Years Old

The Foundation Stage at St Petroc’s incudes our  Kindergarten and Reception Form which are situated next door to each other.

The children in the Early Years start their day at 8.30 am and finish at 3.30 pm.

There is an after school club ( ‘Stay and Play’ ) for parents who require after school supervision. This is open until 5.30 pm.

Our children are welcomed into the Kindergarten at approximately three years of age and transfer on to Reception in the year that they become five.

St Petroc’s emphasises the importance of learning through play and our children interact extremely positively with one another and the atmosphere is busy, productive and always happy.

At the Kindergarten stage Children are able to attend as many or as few sessions as desired. This can be mornings and lunch, mornings or afternoons only or full days.
The Kindergarten has its own spacious garden and play area adjacent to two large classrooms.

Once children join Reception the majority attend full time and slowly begin the transition towards formal education.

The Early Years Grant from Cornwall County Council is available and can be claimed for children between the age of three and five.

The Foundation Stage offers well-planned and structured learning opportunities which are appropriate for their age and stage of development.

There are 6 areas of development and learning:

1.    Personal, social and emotional development.
2.    Communication, language and literacy.
3.    Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy.
4.    Knowledge and understanding of the world.
5.    Physical development.
6.    Creative development.

Our aim is to inspire our children and prepare them for formal education whilst encouraging them to develop an enquiring mind.

"In Year three I had Mrs Tilzey. One of the best things about that time was being asked to play in the Under 11 teams but the worst was that we had to do dictation and I always did really badly!"
