SPORTS AT ST PETROC'S

DEVELOPING SELF-CONFIDENCE FOR LIFE

Sport at St Petroc’s is a major strength – overseen by our Director of Sport, the England Counties and Cornwall rugby player, Ben Hilton.

We tailor the school day so that the Seniors (Years 3- 6) are able to take part in sport and activities every afternoon. Juniors (Reception to Year 2) also have 2 dedicated sports sessions a week. For all pupils this is in addition to an hour long curriculum PE lesson each week and two break times each day when the children are given free (supervised) access to our large playing field and adventure playground on site.

Our overall aim is to encourage a love of sport and exercise while, at the same time, helping to instil the principles of good sportsmanship and a healthy will to win.

Under 11 and Under 9 girls and boys teams, in all major sports, compete with other schools in the area and we are proud of our strong record.  Boys play Rugby, Football, Hockey and Cricket while girls play Netball, Hockey and Rounders.  In the Summer Term all pupils take part in Athletics building up to our extremely popular Sports Day.

Swimming lessons at the excellent local indoor pool are part of the curriculum all year round from Reception onwards.  Pupils also take part in Cross Country over the winter months leading into the annual St Petroc's Cross Country Event which has seen upwards of 400 local school pupils taking part on Summerleaze Downs.

Aside from the mainstream sports we also look to cater for any individual interests and talents.  A number of pupils take part in Gymnastics out of school and we have recently been running our own Gymnastics club.  Horse-riding, Golf, Squash, Tennis and Table-Tennis have all been played by pupils in recent years as well as numerous other sports such as Surfing, Wakeboarding and even Indoor Skiiing.

In the past two years we have had pupils qualify for the ISA Nationals in Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and Netball.

We regularly make use of the fantastic facilities at Shebbear College, where we have access to a full size Astroturf and Sports Hall.

Our overall aim is to encourage a love of sport and exercise while, at the same time, helping to instil the principles of good sportsmanship and a healthy will to win.  In the past two years we have had pupils who qualified for the ISA Nationals in Swimming, Cross Country, Athletics and Netball.  The U11 girls came 4th in the Netball Nationals and one of our girls came 3rd at the National Athletics Championships.  Finally, one of our pupils is the current U9 National Indoor Skiing Champion.

Old Petrocian Noel Harrison (son of Rex) competed at the Winter Olympics in 1952 and 1956 while brothers Jack and Tom Buckner took part in the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympics.  More recently Old Petrocian Emily Currie has become Women’s Longboard Surf Champion as well as captaining the Great Britain Surf Team.
